My WellNurseLife journey began this past year when I finally admitted to myself that I did NOT have a WellNurseLife 🙁
So, when I decided it was time to embark upon my own WellNurseLife journey, I decided to focus on physical activity and fitness, along with improved diet and nutrition. The dimension of physical wellness seemed like the most obvious and tangible dimension to focus on. I expected to see results in how I looked and expected to have improvement in how I felt overall. And, this is exactly what I got!! But not for long…
I started out this spring and summer really dedicated to increasing my physical activity. I was rockin’ it and was feeling sooooo good about myself!! In May I ran a 5k and in June I walked a 1/2 marathon. But since June…I…have…been…slacking…BIG TIME!!!! And I am soooo disappointed with myself 🙁
When I was really on track with my physical activity, I also was eating really well. I was eating a plant based diet, lean protein, low to no carbs, and a minimal to no sugar diet. The diet changes and increased physical activity made a huge difference in how I felt from head to toe. I was seeing and feeling changes in my body, and I was feeling so proud! But, with time, I soon drifted away from my healthy eating plan too 🙁
Ugh!!!! So many of us struggle with this. The #1 health and wellness challenge today is physical wellness including diet, nutrition, and physical activity. Why you ask? There are soooooo many reasons why this is the case!! (Watch for a post later this week that focuses on why it can be such a struggle for nurses to develop and maintain their own physical wellness). For me, I am at the point where I have to regroup, set some clear and measurable goals, create an action plan as to how I am going to reach those goals and then MAKE…IT…HAPPEN!!
It is so easy to get frustrated and discouraged 🙁 So, how do you get back on track? 🙂 Here are 4 strategies you can use to regroup, refocus, and get back on-track with your physical wellness:
- Reflect on why you got off-track. Ask yourself “How the heck did this happen?”. Make a list of all the reasons you think you got off-track and drifted away from the healthy habits you had been establishing. This will help you to see what interfered and will allow you to identify your triggers, your distractions, and your excuses…(you know we all have them!).
- Set a new goal. I have learned that if I don’t have an event on the calendar that provides a clear goal with a deadline, then I lose my focus. I start to let everything else take priority over my physical wellness. Find an event to participate in (check out www.runningintheusa.com which lists walks, runs, and trail events from 5ks to marathons and beyond). Or if you’d rather, create your own event or challenge on a set date that you can work towards (e.g. “On X date I am scheduled to walk 10 miles”). Setting a clear measurable goal with a deadline will allow you to create a timeline and schedule so that you can be sure you are on track to achieve that goal!!
- Create solutions . Get creative here! Again, make a list of all the possible solutions you can think of that will help you to regroup and regain that focus. What can you change in your daily life to help you reach that goal? What can others do to support you? Go back to #1….how can the items on this list be turned from obstacles and distractions into solutions?
- Celebrate!! We can’t forget this important piece. It is important to reward yourself for all the discipline, dedication, and hard work that got you to your goal!! Make a final list as to how you will celebrate your achievements, milestones, and successes!! Remember, be good to yourself, you deserve it 🙂
Good luck getting back on-track! There is plenty here to help you get started! Watch for more to come as we embark on our physical wellness journey together.
Wishing You Well,
