I feel like I spend a lot of time thinking about symptoms that I still struggle to manage. I’m constantly evaluating what I can try next to get these symptoms under control and reach my goal of feeling significantly better the majority of the time. I’ve got to admit….it is easy to focus on what isn’t working when you don’t feel well day after day. Soooo…..to balance that out, I make an effort to take time to appreciate what IS working and what IS making a difference. Even though chronic illness often feels like it is an endless battle, we can’t forget to acknowledge and appreciate the progress that we have made. :).
Management of my chronic illness, just like many other chronic illnesses, varies day-to-day and sometimes even hour to hour. Chronic illness patients are constantly looking for tools and tactics to help them get through each day. Finding solutions requires spending time evaluating treatment options, learning what the research and literature says, and talking to others that are on a similar journey. The effort put towards learning how to manage chronic illness symptoms DOES pay off. I’ve had some successes along the way, so I wanted to share what has made a difference for me so far. 🙂
Systemic Mast Cell Disease (aka: Mast Cell Activation Syndrome/Mast Cell Activation Disorder) is a chronic illness that does not have one specific treatment regimen to manage symptoms. Symptoms from this illness are vast, and vary from patient to patient, with no two patients the same. Therefore, treatment for these patients varies widely as well. Patients work to develop their own treatment regimen which often includes prescription meds, over the counter supplements, and a variety of lifestyle changes including diet modification and stress management.
I was diagnosed almost 3 years ago, and it has been a trial and error of meds since the start. Most patients, if not all, need a H1 blocker and a H2 blocker, that is pretty standard, but from there, there is a lot of variation.
The trial and error can be VERY frustrating but when you find something that helps and makes a difference….it is a BIG deal….YAY!!!!! WOOOO HOOOO!!!!
And that is what I found with supplements from ONNIT! There are a few ONNIT supplements that I have in my toolbox to pull out when I’m having a flare and experiencing specific symptoms, but, the one that has made a noticeable difference for me is ViruTech.
ViruTech is an antioxidant formula consisting of Vitamin C, Zinc, and Selenium. Mast cell research has shown that high doses of vitamin c stabilizes mast cells. If the cell is stabilized, then it is not degranulating (or breaking open), so it is not releasing all of the mediators (or chemicals) such as heparin, histamine, leukotrienes, cytokines and prostaglandins, that result in symptoms.
Thanks to my husband, he found this supplement for me and said “let’s give it a try”. And I haven’t turned back since! Not a day goes by that I don’t take my ViruTech!! I take 3 capsules twice daily. It also contains L-Lysine, Quercetin, and Alpha Lipoic Acid. Quercetin and Alpha Lipoic Acid have been shown to stabilize mast cells as well. This combination of immune-supportive nutrients has definitely made a difference in how I feel and has helped in the management of my illness.
Check out www.onnit.com to learn more about this AWESOME company created by Aubrey Marcus and supported by Joe Rogan, and to get your hands on ViruTech and other supplements that I have found to help with chronic illness management. (I will share more about additional supplements that I have found to be helpful in future posts).
If you are struggling with chronic immune system related illness, consider giving ViruTech a try, you never know, it may make a noticeable difference for you. And if not, then you can cross it off your list of “things to try” and move on to the next.
Chronic illness management is full of trial and error. It can be a very daunting journey, so when you find something that helps, take time to recognize and appreciate the victory that is the result of your endless hard work! For me, ViruTech is this victory! It has made a difference in my symptom management and has helped to improve my quality of life. For that, I am forever grateful!!
Good luck, and as always, wishing you well!
